Australian Seabird Rescue

Australian Seabird Rescue was established at Ballina, New South Wales in 1992, following the rescue of a pelican hooked in fishing tackle. Since that time, ASR volunteers have been involved in the rescue and rehabilitation of seabirds and shorebirds, marine turtles, and to date, have rescued over 1000 Australian Pelicans. Learn more...
New education programs
ASR is constantly developing and changing our education programs to ensure every visit to our centre is unique. This year we are developing value-added education programs for all children from prep to grade 12. The programs are based on current NSW syllabus and can be easily integrated with school curriculum. Our volunteers are already delivering these packages to the many schools visiting our education centre. The units offer a fun and educational experience for all ages with activities to take home and into the classroom.

Our objective is to reduce the human impact on the environment. This year, all school groups visiting our centre will learn about coastal ecology, seabird and sea turtle biology, as well as human impacts on our environment and strategies to reduce them.

All groups visiting our centre are strongly encouraged to make a visit to the Waste Recycling Centre nearby. Location: Southern Cross Drive, Ballina.

New rescue vehicle!

New rescue vehicle

The regular Thursday team was lucky to be on hand when the new ASR rescue vehicle made her maiden journey down the driveway, horn beeping all the way!! Very kindly donated by our WildlifeLink Sanctuary sponsor, the Tony and Lisette Lewis Foundation, the truck is vital to our operations in the North Coast region, and gives us the capability to spread our message beyond our region as well.

“That’s how I found out about your organisation,” new volunteer Aimee Irving-Bell explains. “I was looking to join a group like yours and then I saw the truck driving through Byron Bay, so I scrambled to write down the phone number.”

Thanks to our sponsors

We would especially like to thank the businesses in the Northern Rivers who assisted ASR securing a new rescue vehicle. The Tony and Lisette Lewis Foundation who donated the vehicle, Ballina Toyota for supplying the vehicle sooner than we all expected, Cemex (formerly Readymix) for the ongoing fuel sponsorship and Seesaw Signs and Visual Displays in Byron Bay for their help with sign-writing.
