July 29 Ballina – Marine Mammal Stranding Preparedness Day

ASR volunteers regularly respond to marine mammal incidents all along the NSW coastline.  Understanding the management of an incident to ensure the best possible outcome for the safety of volunteers and the welfare of the animal(s) is key to a successful outcome.

Each year a Marine Mammal Incident Preparedness Workshop is run at the ASR WildlifeLink Sanctuary.  Anyone is welcome to come along.  Attending ASR members will be signed up to the annual marine mammal incident team.

Topics include:

  • A general overview of Sirenians, Pinnipeds and Cetaceans
  • Beginners guide to identifying seals, whales and dolphins of the North Coast
  • An historical overview of marine mammal incidents
  • Key information on the roles and responsibilities of all agencies involved in an incident
  • An overview of the resources available in the the Northern Rivers area
The course runs from 9:30am to 4:00pm.  Guest speakers are drawn from local universities, National Parks and Wildlife Service and other organisations specialising in marine mammals.  All attendees receive an ASR Marine Incident Response Manual, and refreshments.   There is a small fee involved to cover the costs of printing and catering.
